Moving Home During the Summer Holidays

It’s that time of year – school’s out for summer!

If you are planning to or are going to move during the summer holidays, there a couple things to consider. The summer holidays is a fantastic time of year to move home, some children will move from one school to another and the roads are generally quieter. However, getting a removal company during this time, especially at short notice, can be harder than normal.

What are the positives and negatives of moving during the summer holidays?

Positives

  • Children move to new schools or are away from classes.
  • Traffic is lighter, ensuring a speedy move on the day.
  • The weather is much nicer, and the days are longer, meaning at the end of the day you can put your feet up and enjoy your new home!

Negatives

  • Busy time of year for removal companies, may be tricky to find availability.
  • Some removal companies will charge a higher fee during this period.
  • Younger children will require child care during the move.

Here are some useful tips to help with your summer move:

  1. Utilise your teenage children! While younger children might need managing or looking after by a relative, older children can help you with the lighter lifting or easier jobs around the home.
  2. Move on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday – The later days of the week tend to be busier for removal companies as most people tend to take days off to ensure they have a longer weekend to deal with the move and unpack.
  3. Book your removal company well in advance. Removal companies can be booked up for four to six weeks around the summer holidays, so ensure you get in at least a month before you want to move.
  4. Be flexible with your moving times – If you are moving only a short distance or do not have much to move, ask your removal company if they have availability as early as possible during the day, as they might have the ability to fit you in. Plus, if the weather is hot that day, you can get the worst part of the move done before it gets too hot!
  5. Stay hydrated and have plenty of healthy snacks – There is nothing worse than moving heavy objects in the heat and losing lots of energy. Make sure you drink plenty of water and have healthy snacks to keep those energy levels high and avoid sugar slumps in the afternoon.
