Chris Birds

Partner & Chartered Valuation Surveyor

How can I help?

I am an Equity Partner in Boxall Brown & Jones and BB&J Commercial and share overall responsibility for the day to day running of the company, which includes the residential sales and lettings sections of the business. As a Chartered Surveyor, I have many years’ experience in all areas of the residential property sales and management. I am also an Equity Director of Burton Upon Trent based Commercial Property Surveyors Rushton Hickman Ltd.

Experience

I have worked within the Derby property market since I left school, working for several high-profile firms of Estate Agents and Chartered Surveyors. After completing my A levels, I went on to study a degree in Estate Surveying before going on to become a Chartered Surveyor. I am a Registered Valuer/member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) and a Fellow of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA); organisations with which I am actively involved at both local and national level.

Having been the Chairman of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire branch of the NAEA for many years and serving on national committees, I was awarded a distinguished service honour in 2009.

I have been voted as one of the top 250 inspiring businesspeople in Derbyshire and I am proud to serve the community as a Presiding Magistrate in the Southern Derbyshire Criminal Courts.

I became the Deputy Under Sheriff of Derbyshire in 2024. In this role I support the High Sheriff of Derbyshire who is appointed by His Majesty the King to represent him in matters relating to the judiciary and the maintenance of law and order in the county.

In August 2025, I was selected by the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) to become a Valuer Member of the First Tier Tribunal. (Property Chamber). In this judicial role, I preside over a wide range of property disputes in the United Kingdom, with specific focus on the Midlands.

I am honoured to serve as a Trustee of Foundation Derbyshire, which is a brilliant Derbyshire charity managing donated funds and effectively distributing grants to the county’s grassroot charities/community groups. I am also a Trustee of The Arkwright Society which is focussed on the preservation of Sir Richard Arkwright’s historic mills in Cromford, Derbyshire.

How long have you been part of the team?

I joined Boxall Brown & Jones in 2001 and became a partner in 2005.

Fun Fact

I have climbed to Everest Base Camp raising over £18,000 for the British Heart Foundation, ran the London Marathon and competed in the Great North Run on five occasions. I am a keen sailor and qualified RYA day skipper.

I live in Allestree with my wife and two daughters.

Anthony Lomas

Partner

How can I help?

In a professional and friendly manner, I can knowledgeably advise you on the value, marketing, and saleability of your property. I can also assist with lettings, regularly advising all types of landlords from first time investors to owners of large portfolios.

Experience

Having let and sold properties throughout Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire since 2003, I have built up an in-depth knowledge of the residential lettings and sales market. I am a member of the National Association of Estate Agents and hold a technical award in the sale of Residential Property. I have been successfully providing market appraisals to home sellers since 2005.

How long have you been part of the team?

I joined the firm in 2006 as a Valuer for both lettings and sales, being involved within Estate Agency since graduating from the University of Derby in 2002. During my time at Boxall Brown & Jones I have played a pivotal role in the continued success and expansion of the sales & lettings department. In 2016, I was made a Partner and now assist in running the business.

I once jumped out of a plane (with a parachute!) from 12,000 feet.

Jo Hutchinson

How can I help?

Living and working in Belper, I have lots of experience and knowledge of the residential market in the town and surrounding area. I help buyers find their dream home, offering honest professional advice and precise valuations.

Experience

Having practised Estate Agency since 1999, I have gained experience in all aspects of the business, particularly valuing. My knowledge and enthusiasm drives the rental and sales departments from strength to strength, never missing an opportunity and enjoying continued success and expansion.

Since joining the practice in 2006, I have opened and managed the Belper branch, earning a strong and respected position within Boxall Brown and Jones and more importantly with my clients and acquaintances. I was rewarded for my hardwork and dedication when I was promoted to Associate Partner in May 2010.

Mark Richardson

Partner and Chartered Surveyor

How can I help?

I have nearly 30 years’ experience as a Chartered Surveyor, and I have worked around Derby for almost all of that time. As a commercial surveyor, I advise clients on a wide range of disposals, particularly in relation to development. As an RICS Registered Valuer, I also carry out a variety of property valuations for many commercial banks, pension funds and private clients. I specialise in valuing developments, land and HMOs amongst others. I am also an RICS Accredited Expert and have achieved the Advanced Professional Award in Expert Witness Evidence. In this capacity I undertake a wide range of sometimes complex valuation reports for legal purposes such as professional negligence, taxation and divorce.

Experience

I have been a business partner since 2005 and enjoy the challenges of day to day business together with tackling the planning and growth of all aspects of BB&J Commercial.

I have been with the business since 1994.

I have a variety of interests, particularly road cycling. Other hobbies include collecting great music on vinyl records.

Graham Bancroft

How can I help?

With my vast experience, knowledge and contacts I can provide a comprehensive agency service across all types of commercial properties, whether to individual clients or large PLC property organisations. In addition, I also undertake commercial property valuations for a variety of purposes including loan security, pension funds and company accounts to name a few.

I have a wide range of professional experience and can provide Landlord and Tenant advice, namely rent reviews and lease renewals, to numerous clients along with rating and compulsory purchase work.

Experience

Born in Derby, I began my career in commercial property in 1999 at Derby City Council being a graduate of De Montfort University, before very quickly joining Salloway Property Consultants as a Valuation Surveyor. I quickly established myself within the company resulting in being made Associate Director in 2010 before joining BB&J Commercial in 2013.

Claire Taylor

Senior Sales Negotiator

How can I help?

I have worked for Boxall Brown & Jones for just over 20 years. As a Senior Sales Negotiator, I work on the Residential Sales side of the business, but also help out with our properties to Let too. My role mainly includes arranging viewings, taking offers, agreeing sales and progressing sales through to completion, dealing with our Vendors and their Purchasers as well as Solicitors and other Estate Agents.

Experience

I previously worked in the Building Society Industry for around 15 years, gaining lots of insight into finances and mortgages etc, I then felt it was a natural progression to work in an Estate Agency and believe my knowledge in the finance industry has proven to be invaluable.

I have worked with Boxall Brown & Jones since 2004, providing administration as well as negotiating and progressing sales.

Fun Fact

I am a very sociable person, I love going out, but equally happy staying in with my husband, kids and dog Maddie. I also love my Greek holidays but just as happy in Cornwall, when the weather is nice at least.

I manage the lettings accounts and I do the administration and social media for the sales department.

Experience

I previously had a background working in banking for 6 years for a large corporate bank, then I took the plunge into the world of residential property letting in 2005. Since then, I have developed my expertise within this field as well as overseeing and handling all monetary transactions on a monthly basis.

I have enjoyed being part of Boxall Brown & Jones since 2006, which at that point only consisted of three people.  The department has more than tripled since then and I have been a crucial part of that growth.

I joined the BBJ Belper team in June 2024 and I’m now part of the Derby team too.

Together with my Fox Terrier, I’m a keen walker and feel blessed to live so close to the beautiful Peak District.  We have a reputation for finding mud…even during draught conditions😱  And more often than not our 5 mile circular walks turn into 7 miles🐾.  I am forever amazed that we still have willing victims friends who opt to join us.  Maybe it’s the country pub at the end of our walk that is the biggest attraction…Cheers!

Fun Fact

My favourite thing in my downtime is theatre. I love to visit London’s west end for Musical Theatre. My 17 yearly daughter is just off to a Musical Theatre college that feeds the West End in London and I hope to watch her achieve her dream of performing in a West End show in a few years time. My favourite musical is Les Miserablés.

I can offer advice on Agency Services relating to acquisition, disposal and lettings. I have good local knowledge of the Midlands property market having previously worked as a Property Manager for the residential team at Boxall Brown and Jones.

I previously worked in our residential management team at Boxall Brown and Jones, before moving over to commercial agency and I am now working towards Chartered Surveyor status within BB&J Commercial.
