Oakwood

Oakwood is Derby’s largest and newest suburb, which was built largely throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. Several small pockets of shops have appeared as well as two new pubs. A primary school has also been added after many appeals by residents.

The Springwood Leisure Centre, right in the heart of the estate, was built in 1997 and offers access to all including disabled people. Its facilities include a sports hall, dance studio, squash courts and a fitness studio.

Chaddesden Wood, also known as bluebell wood, situated off Springwood Drive is special because it is the only ancient oak woodland in the city of Derby. It was declared a local nature reserve in 1991 to help ensure its proper protection and management. The wood contains a nature trail, about one kilometre long, that the visitor can follow.
